I'm Not Going To Hate Gay People for Christ
A funny thing happened on the way to posting that gay people shouldn’t burn in hell.
Christians got very mad.
Here is what happened. A lot of Christians on the internet were upset about Pride.
This same month it came out that famed megachurch pastor Robert Morris admitted to grooming and raping a 12-year-old.
Yikes.
I assumed that this shocking news would take priority over the outrage at having to see pretty rainbow flags for 30 days. So I said something.
“This is common sense,” I thought. “No one could disagree with me,” I thought. I would much rather defend the sweet gay couple down the street who spend their nights watching old CSI reruns than the powerful church pastor who is…a rapist.
Jesus who I love, loved the broken. Jesus who I love is love. Jesus only attacked the powerful. THIS IS JUST IN LINE WITH JESUS I THOUGHT LIKE A FUCKING IDIOT!
My comment section quickly turned into a cesspool filled with dumpster fires on top of Shit Mountain.
People were in my comments saying sin is sin and being gay is as bad as child rape. They called me a fake Christian. A heretic. (blushes) etc.
This wasn’t one fringe person either. A lot of people were saying this.
But not the Christians I assumed. Not the ones who march with signs at funerals cause they don’t know how to use the internet so they use cardboard instead.
Christians who followed me. Many who found me in spaces that seemed nice and inclusive.
Do nice and inclusive Christians also believe that gay people are going to burn in hell? Do they believe that when a pastor turns out to be a rapist it is a “moral failing” but gay people who just want to love are disgusting and against God?
Give me Rupaul’s Drag Race over the Catholic Church’s underground railroad of pedos, any day please.
I was sad. I was angry. I felt stupid.
Many of these Christians were hiding behind biblical bumper sticker slogans like, “Love the sinner hate the sin” as they unloaded their hate.
That’s cool and all but if you leap into every online comment section to talk about how evil being gay is are you loving the sinner?
(No.)
I love God. God made people. Gay people are people.
Seems simple.
My first reactionary reaction was to turn against Jesus. Come and get your people homie. Like Jesus is the designated driver for the table of frat boys that just started a fight over a spilled beer at Buffalo Wild Wings.
I did a podcast with my wife instead. It was called We Aren’t Christian Anymore (someone watched a YouTube tutorial on clickbait titles!) You can listen HERE
We talked about this and I braced for rage. But instead, my DM’s blew up with Christians. THE GOOD KIND!
People who loved gay people and Jesus. People who were raised to hate gay people but someone close to them came out. People who…wait for it…were GAY…AND…loved JESUS.
Holy shit! I felt free. I also felt it will take a very long time to find our audience. But I’ll figure that out later.
The bottom line is this. We can’t judge groups by their worst representatives. We can still love God even when we feel like we don’t fit in.
I’m going to keep speaking out. I’m going to keep losing followers. But if I can make some people feel less alone I think that’s what God would want.
