When God Created Dogs

A poem

Look

Humans were not to be trusted

From day 1 we were probably gonna mess this place up

So God

created dogs

And sure

he could have created better humans, but this seemed more

fun —

dogs

all kinds

big ones, needy ones,

and ones who pretended to be scary but just need

love

like us humans —

us silly humans who were not to be trusted

have a lot in common with these dogs but

are less

cuddly

and more

in our heads

and

would rather a promotion

than a treat

which is

a dumb way to live

and sometimes

when things feel like they can’t get worse

when we can’t catch our own breath

(which should be the easiest of all human functions)

when we are almost surprised by how bad things can seem

along comes a dog

one of gods keepers of good

one of gods captains of mischief

one of gods lieutenants of making life worth living

and they

do

fucking ANYTHING

and we pause the pause we need to take more often

there they are

at the perfect time

in all of gods glory

holding a stick

or just …. sitting

or maybe, doing something in a video on a screen that has been passed around

100, 789 times, and, man that is a lot of likes, and guess who doesn’t even care?

Dogs.

Cause they are perfect

and we watch

breathing that original breath that we were never

supposed to lose

knowing everything is going to be

ok
